I do not regret taking online courses for my college education. In fact I have enjoyed most of it more than I enjoyed the first year and a half of attending a college campus. However there is a serious disadvantage that online courses create and that is the ability to discuss, connect, and work in person with a professor and other students.
Image if you will a set of walls that separate the students and professor from each other. When the class first walks into their area they see a talk box on the wall and use it to communicate and introduce themselves toe everyone. After that day the talk box turns off and upon inspection the student notices many talk boxes randomly placed along the walls. When trying to talk into a few different talk boxes no response is given, but on the second day of trying a response is finally given.
What I am trying to get at is that there is no development for communication in the online classroom or at least my current college does not offer a good way to communicate between each other. The forum like posts we make are rather weak and are actually less functional than an actual forum. I can go does or even weeks without a response from the professor and sometimes the response is “Great Job on this, you really understand the material.” That is fine and dandy but what did I do a great job and how do you know I understand the material?
Communication is key, please help by making our future better. Education is very important and if it is not being communicated correctly then we should fix the problem. Not only is an online classroom at a disadvantage we have these same problems in real classrooms and at times nothing is being retained or learned. Do not rely on the educators in schools to adequately teach your children and be more active in their education. Make sure they are learning something and do not ignore their questions. Do not tell them great job, explain to them why they did a great job.
